An operation by Special Suppressive Counter-terrorism Unit (EKAM) of the Greek Police has located the hideout of arrested terrorist Nikos Maziotis in a secluded apartment on the fifth floor of a building located at 27 Ypsilantou Str., at the Pefki-Marousi districts border.
Maziotis’ hideout was rented under a third name and not with the name “Mihail Mihelakis” on the fake ID card that police gave to the public yesterday.
The owner of the apartment recognized the suspected terrorist from the fake ID that was released to the media and called EKAM, which immediately sealed the building. Neighbors also recognized the person living on the fifth floor apartment.
EKAM is searching to see if there is anyone inside, while bomb disposal engineers are also on site in case there are booby-trapped items or entry points.
The dwelling, in which Maziotis lived, had been rented a year and a half ago.
One of the three keys found on Maziotis at the time of his arrest fit the apartment’s lock. For the time being, it remains unknown whether the arrestee’s partner, Paula Roupa, was living with the suspected terrorist and their child in this apartment.
After the site has been secured, forensic experts will take over, scouring the flat for clues, finger prints and DNA samples.
At the same time, police will also be checking the garage space Maziotis had been using while renting the flat.
An investigation is also under way in Grammatiko, eastern Attica, Greece, where Maziotis is said to have been seen getting off an intercity bus.
Police is expected to publish a photograph of Maziotis later in the day, in a bid to seek information from the public that could lead to the arrest of his accomplices or the discovery of the terrorist organization’s hideouts.
