university of creteGreek universities scored very low in the world rankings, while also scoring low on a European level. The top ten universities in the world are mainly from the U.S.
As for Greece, the University of Crete got first place, according to the evaluation, based on several bibliometric indicators, of the Dutch Leiden University.
On a national level, the ranking of the Greek universities following the University of Crete is: the University of Ioannina, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the University of Athens (UoA) and the University of Patras.
Out of the 750 institutions evaluated, the University of Crete ranked 333rd, while the University of Ioannina was 450th, NTUA was 454th, AUTH was 506th, UoA was 548th and the University of Patras was 588th.
First in the world rankings was the U.S. Rockefeller University, while it is noteworthy that the top ten universities in the world where all American higher education institutions, such as MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Stanford, California Institute of Technology, Princeton, Santa Barbara University (UCSB), San Francisco University and Yale.
The leading institution in Europe is the University of Cambridge, followed by the Polytechnic School of Lausanne.
In the European rankings (288 universities), the University of Crete was at 150th place.
