Australian Nurses in Anniversary of Gallipoli Battle

gallipoliAntonis Hatzidiamantis, the mayor Lemnos island in northern Greece, met with Clare Ashton, research associate of the two high Nursing Schools of Australia. Their meeting was held in the context of celebrating 100 years from the landing of Australian troops of the British Empire in Gallipoli.

Ashton, acknowledging the contribution of the Greek island to the Gallipoli campaign, is planning to organize a visit of 100 Australian nurses in Greece and Turkey, in September 2015, in memory of the nurses who treated the wounded soldiers during the campaign.

The meeting was also attended by the president of the Municipal Council of Lemnos, Kostas Adamidis, MP for the state of Victoria John Pantazopoulos and Ashton’s collaborator, Nikos Volovinis. They discussed the organization of the journey and the cooperation with local authorities and health care bodies of Lemnos.

The Greek island played an important role in the Gallipoli campaign because of its position near Turkey. It served as a naval base, refueling station, medical care center and a refuge for the ANZAC soldiers.

ANZAC Day, celebrated on April 25, is the most important commemoration of military casualties and veterans in Australia and New Zealand. Every year, thousands of Australians along with the country’s political leadership visit Gallipoli to honor the historic anniversary.
