Press Photographers Testify on Golden Dawn Members Attack

The two press photographers who were attacked by supporters of the extreme-right wing party Golden Dawn testified to the prosecutors. The attack took place while the two photographers were covering the court appearance of GD leader Nikos Michaloliakos and two other MPs (Yiannis Lagos and Christos Pappas) last week.
On Monday, the Magistrates leading a probe into alleged criminal charges against Golden Dawn, heard evidence from Simela Pantzartzi and Yiannis Kemos who claimed that they were injured during an unprovoked attack by the party’s members who had gathered outside the court to support their jailed leader.
The head of the Greek Union of Photojournalists, Marios Lolos, also gave a deposition on the incident.
He accused police that they witnessed the beating of the two photographers but failed to intervene and stop it. He also presented evidence on previous attacks of GD members against journalists.
When the police vehicle transferring Golden Dawn leader, Nikos Michaloliakos, MP Christos Pappas and MP Yiannis Lagos arrived outside the Court building to give their supplementary testimonies to the prosecutor, the crowd of supporters that was gathered tried to approach them. Police made use of tear gas to prevent them and during the incident, the two photojournalists were injured.
