Melbourne’s Greek Community Grieves World Cup Loss to Costa Rica

Greek fansGreece’s loss to Costa Rica ahead of the World Cup quarter-finals caused sorrow to all members of Melbourne’s Greek community who had gathered in cafes to watch the game on big screens.

Melbourne has the thirdlargest Greek-speaking population in the world, after Greece’s two largest cities, Athens and Thessaloniki.

Crowds of Greek fans wrapped with Greek flags were watching the game full of anxiety. The defeat of the national team to Costa Rica disappointed them but they claimed that they feel proud of their team’s performance.

“It’s very tense, (but) we’ve never been this far in the World Cup and it’s very exciting,” said a Greek fan at the beginning of the penalty shoot-out.

“You can take positives out of it, but you can’t help but feel like crap. Considering everything, they played really well, but that doesn’t change the fact that they lost,” said a Greek supporter with teary eyes.

The Greek national football team missed the opportunity to pass onto the next phase of the World Cup after a tense game against Costa Rica.

The captain of the Greek team, Giorgos Karagounis, who retired from the national team after completing 139 games on Sunday, said: “It just did not work out well for us in the end, but this is a team that we should all be proud of.”
