Former Grand Slam Finalist Marcos Baghdatis’ Comeback in Vancouver

Former world top-10 Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus has confirmed his entry into the Odlum Brown Van Open Presented By Miele. The $200,000 event will take place from July 26 – August 3 at West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club.

Baghdatis  was  finalist  to  Roger  Federer  at  the  2006  Australian  Open,  a  semifinalist  at Wimbledon later that same year, and has attained a career-best ranking of eighth in the world.The 29-year-old reached the fourth round of the French Open in 2007 and the third round of theUS Open last year. During the 2010 season, Baghdatis was the only player to beat both Federer and Rafael Nadalwhile  they were each ranked as world number-1.  He carried the flag of  Cyprus during theOpening Ceremonies of the London 2012 Summer Olympics and made it to the third round ofthe tournament, falling to eventual gold medallist Andy Murray. Baghdatis was the only playerwho won a set off Murray during the event.

This is the second time Baghdatis will play at the Odlum Brown VanOpen Presented By Mieleafter he claimed the men’s title with a straight sets win over Xavier Malisse in front of a capacitycrowd back in 2009. “I am very excited to be returning to Vancouver,” Baghdatis said after confirming his return to theOdlum Brown.

“I have very fond memories of my time there in 2009. I had a great tournamentand hope to enjoy it this year as much as I did back then.”

As a member of the Cyprus Davis Cup team, Baghdatis has the longest winning streak of any ofthe current ATP players in Davis Cup matches, and the 2nd most of all-time.

“When Marcos was here in 2009, the evening matches had a very similar buzz as world soccermatches. Our attendance was standing room only and Marcos was absolutely fantastic with thecrowd,” added Odlum Brown VanOpen Tournament Director Ryan Clark.
