The National Technical School of Athens (NTUA) is being occupied by the school’s administrative employees, while all lectures and courses have been cancelled. The University of Patras is also under seizure and its administrative employees decided to stop three candidates for the position of its Dean to speak publicly as scheduled. Administrative employees have warned that they do not intend to end their strike action, which could lead to the loss of the academic semester. They request that no administrative employees lose their job, while their Senate requests the rehiring of everyone who has been sacked.
Administrative employees from NTUA are calling the administrations of all Greek universities to join their strike action, despite that fact that exam period for this semester begins next week, or in some cases is already underway. We will not allow “the Greek government is going to repeat the mistakes of the previous period,” they stated.
At a Senate of University of Athens meeting, the largest university of the country, Dean Theodosis Pelegrinis, opposed to the government decisions. He asked that the government fulfills the commitments of former Greek Education Minister, Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos, to rehire 800 administrative employees. However, the current Minister of Education, Andreas Loverdos, met with the Federation of University administrative employees and presented them the government’s decisions.
As for the eight universities hit by suspensions, Loverdos said that the process of the assessment of their staff will be completed in about 50 days, while for the remaining universities it will take up to four months.
Requesting the re-positioning of anyone who was suspended
The Panhellenic Federation of university administrative employees announced today, June 18, a 48-hour strike for today and tomorrow (Thursday and Friday).
Their main request is once again the reinstatement of all the administrative employees who were suspended. Next week the Federation will meet again to decide on its next moves.
