Lecture on ‘Racism in Greek Public Discourse’ in Melbourne

anti racismThe Ithacan Philanthropic Society in Melbourne will host on Thursday an open lecture by Dr. Efrosini Deligianni on the racist stereotypes and prejudices like xenophobia which have dominated Greek public discourse both at the political and social level.

The event “Racist Talk in Greek Public Discourse:  The Perpetuation of a Racist Ideology” is organized by the Greek History and Culture Seminars of the Greek Community of Melbourne.

The Greek media has played a crucial role in the propagation of a racist ideology. Data analysis has shown that different groups across the Greek media and the political scene in Greece use similar discourse strategies focusing mainly on the discrimination and demonization of the “other”.

Dr. Efrosini Deligianni is a linguist with specialization in Greek historical linguistics. She is currently convener of the Greek Studies Program at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, where she also teaches Introductory Linguistics. As a postgraduate student, she was awarded the Mont Follick Fund for research on Classical Greek.

Her research portfolio focuses on Greek syntactic change, as inextricably tied to socio-contextual and cognitive processing factors. In the past she was actively involved in research programs on Educational Technology, Global Education, and Youth Activism. She is also interested in historiography, translation and creative writing.
