Sotiris Chatzakis, artistic director of the National Theatre of Greece, was invited to Beijing to attend the 2nd International Master Workshop of Theatre and Theatre Companies Management from June 6 to 8 which was organized by the China Collaborative Innovation Center of Theatre Arts Management.  “It’s a great opportunity to refresh our contacts with the Chinese people because we are two nations that have very old cultures, both with a spiritual and ritual past in art,” Chatzakis said. The event gave Chatzakis the opportunity to exchange views with the other attendants and to arrange exchanges of performances, directors, artists, and professors by Greek and Beijing theatres.”There’s a great Chinese dynamic in the arts that is really useful for Greece,” he said.

Although hit by the economic crisis, experiencing a cut in state funding from from 10 million euros to 6 million, the Greek National Theatre has maintained its cultural identity and carried out important collaborations with foreign theatres, including the Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Chatzakis stated that he admires the contemporary Chinese directors and said that the Greek National Theatre would like to invite them to teach in its classes.
