Greek Coast Guard and DEA Seize More than a Ton of Heroine in Athens Operation

Narkotika
A large-scale operation is under way by Greek and American authorities for the dismantling of a large heroin distribution network.
The Greek Coast Guard and Police in collaboration with the American Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have been conducting raids on several properties around Attica, Greece. The authorities found over a ton of heroine in a warehouse in Koropi, which is the largest amount ever seized in Greece.
The police also conducted investigations in a villa in Philothei and in other luxurious houses in Athens’ northern suburbs. They arrested the owner of the villa, daughter of a diamonds trader, her husband who is a shipowner and their 15 year-old son. Authorities arrested a total of 11 people, 5 of which were of foreign origin.
The police also seized six luxury cars which were used for the illegal transfer of the drugs, a weapon containing nine bullets,6,235 euros and other objects.
The geographical position of Greece constitutes the country a transit of illicit drugs. The majority of drugs produced in the Balkans or Asian countries pass through Greece before reaching western countries. Greek gangs are mainly collaborating with Albanian and Romanian traffickers creating a wide criminal network which is often hard to detect.
During recent years the Greek police authorities have proceeded with the dismantling of several gangs. However, investigations have shown that police officials are often involved with drug trafficking.
