Ancient Greek Drama Inspires Contemporary Art

thebans operaPeople used to say that ancient Greek drama has inspired contemporary primary artistic creations in more than one occasion. Since May 3, Julian Anderson’s first opera, “Thebans” is being presented at London’s Coliseum, by the English National Opera. Anderson is a very talented British composer, whose recent work has brought the inspiration of ancient Greek tragedies back to the forefront.

His opera which is based on the Theban trilogy by Sophocles (“Oedipus the King,” “Oedipus at Colonus” and “Antigone”) was praised by the press all over the UK receiving amazing reviews. “Ancient Greek drama lends itself well to any setting – it’s very live and exciting stuff with not a hint of antiquity about it,” said the composer.

The play premiered on May 3 and was attended by several members of various opera houses around the world who are interested in booking the production for performances in the future. The opera will be in London’s Coliseum until June 3.

After the final performance in the UK, the opera will be presented at the Bonn Opera House in May 2015. Bonn Theater was also one of the plays co-producers.
