Residents of Gavdos Vote for Abstention

Greek elections 2014The residents of the island of Gavdos, the southernmost island of Greece, decided to abstain from the European Parliament elections on May 25. They complain about the inertia and indifference of the European Union towards the plans for destruction of the Syrian chemical weapons in the international waters west of Crete.
The decision of Gavdos residents to abstain from elections was taken last March and it was confirmed on May 22. The voters elected their mayor, Evangelia Kallinikou, in the first round of local elections, on May 18. It is not yet clear if the islanders will also abstain from the second round of municipal elections held the same day as the European elections.
Gavdos residents had also abstained from the local elections of 2010 protesting against problems in ferry services that led to the island being barred for a long time.
