November 7 Dedicated to Blood Donation

Blood DonationThe Greek Deputy Minister for Education and Religious Affairs Symeon Kedikoglou and the President of the Association of Friends of Children with Cancer “Elpida” along with the Association “Orama Elpidas” Marianna V. Vardinogiannis signed a cooperation agreement.
“Every country needs on average 60,000 bottles of blood per 1,000,000 residents to cover its blood needs. Greece has 10 million residents, thus needs at least 600,000 bottles. Only 40 percent of this amount is covered by volunteers and 30,000 bottles are annually imported from Switzerland.
Europe has to deal with similar problems as well since more than 500 million citizens depend on just 15 million blood donors. This number is not enough to cover all needs.”
On the basis of this disappointing information, Deputy Minister Symeon Kedikoglou announced that November 7 in Greek schools will be officially dedicated to Volunteerism for Bone Marrow and Blood Donation, as agreed in the cooperation agreement signed between the Ministry of Education and the Associations “Elpida” and “Orama Elpidas.”
