A Book Dedicated to Asia Minor Immigrants in Australia

Smyrna-massacre-refugees_port-1922A book entitled “Flames on the Water – Tears in the Sea,” written by Greek-Australian Dr. Con Aroney was presented in Melbourne, as part of a series of events commemorating the Pontian genocide. The book is dedicated to the Greek immigrants who fled to Australia after the Asia Minor Catastrophe of 1922.

Dr. Aroney is a cardiologist, professor of medicine and scientist researcher in Brisbane. Many of his scientific articles on cardiology have been published in newspapers and magazines.

In his book about the Asia Minor Catastrophe he included various reports by Asa Kent Jennings, pastor of the Methodist Youth Christian Association, who hailed from Ontario, New York and lived the sorrow of the Greeks first hand.

Aroney dedicated his work to his great-grandparents who fled Asia Minor and settled in Australia, as well as to all the heroes of the 1922 Catastrophe. His book includes reports and descriptions of events which he heard from his grandmother and mother.

The Asia Minor Greek Historical Society, based in Brisbane, collects and records any historical material, which is then presented in lectures and other events. Meanwhile, the Society is in contact with other similar organizations in Greece and the rest of the world in order to help people remember.

The presentation of Dr. Aroney’s book was organized by the Greek-Australian Cultural Association and the Pontian Community of Melbourne.
