Recep Tayyip Erdogan: By Conquering Cyprus we Have Cut Off One of your Arms

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, launched an anti-western tirade during a speech at the AKP’s party group in parliament.
He said that Western powers are deceitful and continually impose obstacles, through embargoes and attempts to trip up Turkey.
But these problems, he added, can be overcome by Turkey.
He illustrated the point by quoting from a letter Sokollu Mehmed Pasha wrote to the Ambassador of Venice in 1573; two years after the naval battle of Nafpaktos, referring to Cyprus:
“By conquering Cyprus we have cut off one of your arms; at Lepanto [Nafpaktos] by defeating our navy you have only shaved off our beard. However, you know that a cut-off arm cannot be replaced but shaved-off beard grows thicker.”
The Battle of Nafpaktos or Leapanto; as was the Venetian name of the city in western Greece, took place on 7 October 1571 when a fleet of the Holy League, of which the Venetian Empire and the Spanish Empire were the main powers, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet of the Ottoman Empire.
In his speech in Parliament, Erdogan also vowed to clear Turkey’s state institutions of members of the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ), saying the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will do “everything necessary within the boundaries of the law.”
“We will clear the state mechanism of them, we will clean it. Without this sterilization, our state mechanism will not work comfortably,” Erdogan said
