See Alexander Payne’s 1985 UCLA Film School Short, ‘Carmen’

Payne CarmenBefore Alexander Payne was winning Oscars for “The Descendants” and “Sideways,” the Greek-American filmmaker honed his talents at UCLA Film School, where he made a 15-minute short, “Carmen,” that recently hit the internet.

Made in 1985, “Carmen” is one of Payne’s earliest works and is available for viewing thanks to an upload by writer/director/ editor Giorgos Efthimiou. Though he is not credited to Payne’s short film, Efthimiou has worked on the Greek shorts “Terrori di Imaginacion” and “Pianno.”

Payne’s UCLA Film School short is virtually dialogue-free and features an operatic track. The story is an adaptation of Bizet’s opera and centers on a mentally challenged gas station attendant who meets a beautiful woman, Carmen.
