One in Four Greeks Owes the State a Total of €62.5bn

debtorsNew data released by Greece’s Finance Ministry shows that one in four citizens owes money to the Tax Bureau, which is now due a total 62.5 billion euros.
However, according to the General Secretariat of Public Revenue, in January 2014, the number of people falling behind with their taxes was down to 2,653,032 from 2,922,447 in December 2013.
New arrears amounted to 10.098 billion euros in January, compared to 10.622 billion in December. Data shows that of the 2.6 million Greek debtors, only 92,323 have set up monthly payment plans. Tax collectors are reportedly aiming to claw back 662 million euros of back taxes by the end of 2014.
The figures reflect the dire economic situation befallen the citizens of Greece, where wage cuts and rising unemployment mean ever more taxpayers are failing to meet their obligations.
