toronto Greek culture event

One hundred and ten people of all ages will be dressing up in traditional Greek costumes this Sunday to take part in the celebration of the Greek Community of Toronto that will be held in Polymenakion Cultural Centre, on May 4 at 4pm.

The event, entitled “The Tapestry of Greek Life” will include the presentation of traditional Greek costumes and dance styles from Attica, Corinth, Lefkada, Kythira, Corfu, Karditsa, Pelion, Thrace, Macedonia, Leros, Naxos, Samos, Lesvos, Crete, Rhodes, Kalymnos, Cappadocia, Paros, Ikaria, Peloponnese and Central Greece.

The costumes belong to the private collection of Nancy Athan-Mylonas, artistic director of “Nefeli” theatre, which includes traditional Greek costumes and jewelry.

Nancy Athan-Mylonas said: “I’ve gathered these costumes after years of research in Greece during the 70’s when I studied folk history there. They are authentic uniforms from various places which I bought and kept as a precious amulet of the Greek cultural heritage.”

The traditional Greek costume fashion show will include dances and songs, while participants are aged from 2-75 years.

The chairman of the Greek Community of Toronto Andonis Artemakis, strongly supports any reference to Greek cultural identity and heritage through all Greek Community events and embraces the Hellenism of Toronto and Canada in general.
