One of the most astonishing creations of nature, the Petrified Forest of Lesvos has been put on UNESCO’s world heritage list of cultural and natural landmarks.
The list already included 18 Greek monuments, and in 1981 Greece co-signed UNESCO’s convention concerning the protection of the world’s cultural and natural heritage as a legacy for future generations.
The nomination file for the Petrified Forest of Lesvos was rich in detail about this natural landmark, explaining its uniqueness, its conservation and protection status as well as priceless scientific and academic worth. In addition, the nomination focused on the region’s uniqueness and global significance as a wildlife bridge between Asia and Europe.
Special reference is made to the natural landscape and the cultural environment of the surrounding region as well as how the stone forest contributed to the “birth” of natural sciences in the region of the Aegean sea; Aristotle, for example, and Theophrastus, who was born in Lesvos and wrote the first scientific books about rocks and fossils.
