Crete School Seeks Parental Consent for Holy Communion

holy communionThe director of an elementary school in Ierapetra in Crete, Greece, has asked parents to confirm that their children are prepared to receive Holy Communion. Specifically, last Thursday the students returned home with a form requiring parental signature to confirm they would prepare their children for the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion.
The school director, Michalis Psaroudakis, says the initiative was taken by the school’s teacher association so as to keep parents informed about activities that take place during school hours but which are not always covered by law.
“We wanted to be sure that parents are informed and agree on this. We feel that children should be prepared, as it each parent deems appropriate. In the past, for example, parents had asked to be informed of such activities so that children are dressed appropriately, etc.”
The forms were distributed one day before the Divine Liturgy.
However, it was revealed that last year, the parents of two students complained to the school because they did not want their children to receive Holy Communion. So, perhaps, the motive behind the initiative lies there.
