The main building of the old prison in Trikala, Greece, will be turned into Tsitsanis Museum, according to Kostas Agorastos, Thessaly’s regional governor.
Greek media report the budget for the project is 2.8 million euros and will be 85% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
The project aims to reinforce the building’s structure and to ensure the monument is preserved. The building restoration, in conjunction with the adjacent mosque, will represent the architecture of that era in the region.
After the completion of the project, the prison will have transformed into a purely archaeological site with organized architecture and historical structure on the ground floor and a space with references to the composers and songwriters of Trikala in the upstairs floor. The two exhibitions will be separate and are expected to contribute to the city’s tourism promotion as well as the development of the local region.
In order to reuse the building, it is necessary to restore and enhance the ground floor and also repair the upstairs floor and adapt it to the exhibition’s needs.
The project consists of two subprojects. One is the “Showcasing and Protection of the old prison building in Trikala,” with a budget of one million euros and the “Reuse of the main building of the old prison in Trikala – Tsitsanis Research Center,” with a budget of 1.8 million euros, which will be implemented by the Municipality of Trikala.
The Greek Ministry of Culture will be the beneficiary of this project. Kostas Agorastos said: “The donation of the Tsitsanis’ family will be implemented. It is an amazing project, because Tsitsanis was a great musician, songwriter and this museum will attract many music lovers.”
