UAE Greek Community Encouraged to Not Forget Motherland

DUBAI

According to data from the Emphasis Foundation, lately, many Greeks are migrating to the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) seeking better employment opportunities. Emphasis Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Greeks that live abroad.

This non-profit organization, which has its headquarters in Dubai, encourages Greek expats who have recently arrived in UAE due to the economic recession in Greece, to retain their ties with their motherland.

Maria Karra, founding member of the Emphasis Foundation, which has offices both in Athens and Dubai stated: “The Greek community has been growing rapidly in the UAE. We don’t have precise numbers but we know from our daily dealings from the community that the Greek population here has been increasing daily over the last two years.”

Maria Karra lives in Dubai over the past eight years. She mentioned that in last 12 months, the number of Greek professionals leave Greece for UAE due to the higher remuneration packages and because the GCC countries offer better job opportunities.

Emphasis Foundation estimates that there are approximately 6,000-8,000 Greeks in the UAE. The majority of them live in Dubai and work in banking, finance, construction, health and hospitality sectors.

“My biggest dream is for our people not to lose touch with their country and people, to be active citizens of Greece and continue to remain sensitive to what’s happening back home although they’re living overseas,” Karra said.
