Greece's Public Hospital Staff to Strike Over Shortages

Staff at Greece’s public hospitals have decided to strike to protest staff shortages and a lack of basic materials. The employees pinpoint the Greek Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, as the one responsible for the situation. In particular, the employees’ federation POEDIN underlined that the public healthcare system in Greece can only be compared to that of a third-world country. The same applies to the working conditions the employees have to put up with daily.
POEDIN has also urged its members to gather outside the Health Ministry before participating in the 24-hour strike along with GSEE and ADEDY on Wednesday. On Friday April 11th there will be a five-hour walkout and a demonstration outside the Health Ministry and regional healthcare services. Employees of the Greek public hospitals will escalate their struggle from April 28th with a 24-hour strike.

The employees’ federation claims serious staff shortages exist because 15,000 employees have retired but their positions are still vacant.
