The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) partnered up with Word Travel Market (WTM) Latin America 2014 as a part of the effort to increase overseas tourists to 18 million this year.

This partnership aims to enhance the relationship between Latin America and Greece. The WTM Latin America is a leading global event for the Latin American travel and tourism industry, staged annually in the economic powerhouse of São Paulo.

Greece with its abundant natural beauty and great historical and cultural heritage, has become a desirable destination for many Brazilians in recent years. Tourism is a top priority for Greece as is the Greek economy’s heavy industry. Greece offers a great range of travel destinations, from beautiful islands to cities with great ancient monuments. Last year, Greece received approximately 17 million tourists. The government expects the turnover to reach 18 million this year.

According to a study conducted by the European Travel Commission (ETC), the number of Brazilians who have visited Greece in recent years is increasing.  In particular, between 2008 and 2013 arrivals from Brazil grew by 36%.

Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization, Mr. Panos Livadas, said: “Greece as a tourist destination is growing in popularity in Brazil and Latin America. With this in mind, WTM Latin America was the perfect event to help us cement and then grow South American interest in Greece. I am delighted Greece is the Host Country Partner for WTM Latin America, the partnership is of great benefit to both sides and I look forward to further strengthening our ties and expanding contacts within the region.”

WTM Latin America 2014 will be taking place between April 23-25 at the Transamerica Expo Centre in São Paulo, simultaneously with the 41st edition of the BRAZTOA Business Meeting
