Thousands Receive Food from Greek Solidarity Networks

soup kitchenMore than 13,000 Greek citizens resort to solidarity networks that have been developed in 37 municipalities of Attica, Greece in order to receive their daily meals. According to data from these municipalities, the number of citizens resorting to these solidarity networks to cover their needs is increasing dramatically.
However, the increasing number of volunteers who participate in these structures sends a positive message, that no one will be left alone in such a difficult period. Solidarity networks are based exclusively on volunteers since they don’t accept any form of state aid or funding from EU programs.
Volunteers that organize these provisions have even changed the market rules.  Markets without intermediaries were only the beginning, followed by social groceries and community kitchens. However, despite these efforts there is still much to be done. According to the volunteers, from July 2013 until today, food needs have increased by 28%.
OECD data, recently published show that 17.9% of Greeks do not have enough money even to buy food. Moreover, it was noted that the number of unemployed households has doubled while 1 out of 5 adults is living in a family where every member is unemployed.
