Tourism Ministry Signs Agreement for Better Access by Disabled

AMEAThe president of the National Confederation of Persons with Disability (ESAmeA) Ioannis Vardakastanis on Friday signed a cooperation protocol with Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, which seeks to secure equal access to cultural, leisure, recreational and sporting activities in Greece for people with disabilities.
The aims of the agreement included jointly promoting and carrying out actions on a national level to improve access to facilities and infrastructure, promoting access to reliable systems, providing information and communication relating to tourism and tourism industry entrepreneurs on the benefits of breaking into the disabled market.
During the meeting, Vardakastanis also proposed the publication of a guide tailored to the needs of disabled persons, which Kefalogianni welcomed as an “extremely interesting idea.”
In statements afterward, the minister said her goal was to coordinate actions to make the country’s tourism product accessible to all categories of disabled people.
“Greece must not only have accessible hotels but also accessible archaeological sites, accessible transport and generally provide all the necessary facilities for persons with disabilities. In this context, we have an obligation to use all the financial instruments offered by Europe,” she added.
