Qatar Airways Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker announced on Wednesday his intentions of pursuing new acquisitions. He clarified that he will be moving onto his next business venture after reviving an investment strategy that led to the company receiving stake offers in other carriers including Greece’s Olympic Airways.
According to Mr. Al Baker, Qatar Airways was offered unprofitable Greece’s carrier Olympic Airlines, Air Seychelles and Air Serbia. Moreover, the Italian carrier Alitalia, which has suffered many years of losses, has already indicated its availability in the past five years. However, none of the deals came through.
“We want to make sure that we don’t create a burden on us,” the CEO stated, underlining their goal to acquire only profitable carriers – Baker is not Qatar’s intention to “fix other people’s problems.”
