Greek Prison Guard Fatally Stabbed by Inmate

Greek PrisonA guard at a Greek prison was fatally stabbed by an Albanian inmate on Tuesday, state agency ANA said.
The incident at Malandrino prison, central Greece, came as the government finalized plans for a new high-security prison, a move strongly opposed by inmates around the country.
The prison guard, a father of two, was stabbed with a makeshift knife in an apparent dispute over denied furlough.
Tuesday’s attack occurred as inmates were returning to their cells from the exercise yard.
Spiros Karakitsos, head of the prison guards union, said on Greek radio that while prison guards were frequently attacked, it was the first time a guard had been killed inside a Greek prison. He accused the state of failing to adequately staff prisons.
Greek prisons are notoriously overcrowded and conditions there have been regularly criticized by rights groups.
