Study Finds No Surprises in Greek Porn Industry

Greek-porn-industry-studyThe Greek Porn Project is a recent study that for the first time takes a closer look at the “sinful” topic of Greece’s porn industry. It sought to compare quantitative and qualitative characteristics of various porn films by interviewing the cast and mapping the audience.
“Traditionally, pornography is perceived as something ‘problematic,’ which exerts specific ‘harmful’ effects on human behavior,” says the project leader Lisa Tsaliki, assistant Professor at the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Athens, who for years has been focusing on this field in a theoretical framework and who conducted the study along with 15 student volunteers.
“Greek porn remains largely stereotypical. We increasingly want younger and thinner women, which is a sign that the porn industry is following the norms of the media,” mentions Tsaliki on the results.
As for the Greek audience, the results were more or less expected. From the 880 questioners submitted, it was revealed that the majority of Greeks watching porn are men (78%), aged 17 to 35 (82%). They are mostly heterosexual (91%), working in the private sector (47%) or students (44%) and live in big cities (80%). Opposed to common belief, the Greek porn audience is well educated (63% declared a ‘high’ level of education).
Most of the male (63%) and female (51%) viewers watch porn for pleasure. Other reasons for watching porn include sexual arousal (58%/43%), boredom (31%/22%) or have nothing better to do (29%/15%).
The study also found Greek porn stars to be “their own men”, as it were, as they indulge only in things they want to do, and are proud of their work. Although being often associated with prostitution and human trafficking, porn films were for the most part, an actor’s choice, from which they continuously derive satisfaction.
