Samaras: 33 Greek Museums To Open 8-8 During Summer

samaras“I would like to announce today an initiative that was a personal goal of mine since I was Minister of Culture and I want to thank the current minister for continuing this initiative. I’m talking about something that should have been done decades ago. We have managed to ensure that Greece’s most important museums will be open from 8am to 8pm, seven days a week for the whole summer season,” said the Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras.
“This initiative concerns the 33 largest Greek museums, which account for 95% of visitors and revenue for the period from April 1 until October 31,” he added.
“If you turn look back to recent years, when talking to foreigners but also to Greeks, there is always one question on everyone’s minds: ‘If Greece is a country of culture then why can’t people visiting from Japan or Australia go to a museum and find it open? Why can’t you visit the archeological site of Delphi on a weekend?’ This is in the past. It’s a real step forward that has nothing to do with any political ideology. It has to do with common sense, which says that Greece must show its culture to the world,” said the prime minister.
At the same time, he said, that new policies to clean and green areas surrounding museums and archeological sites will be promoted, and the Archaeological Receipts Fund will be revived.
Samaras also announced that he believes will highlight the social dimension of the government’s cultural policy. “Our unemployed fellow citizens who are in possession of an unemployment card will have access to all our museums for free, while later this policy will be extended to more archeological and cultural sites. Culture is a source of pride for all Greeks; it is the main element of our common national identity. Everyone has the right to culture and no distinctions are allowed, no exclusion will be forgiven,” he said.
