Public Sector Strikes Paralyze Greece

daskaloiADEDY staged a 24-hour strike today, paralyzing the whole country and disrupting the operation of all public services. The strike took place to protest against the deal that the Greek government is trying to make with international creditors which will result in more austerity measures.
Due to the gathering, all streets in the center of Athens near Syntagma Square were closed. The protesters marched from Klafthmonos Square to Amalias Avenue.
Holders of small bonds were gathered in Syntagma outside the State Council to protest at the haircuts on their saving accounts. They threw eggs and held signs that read: “Two years after the massacre of saving accounts, 15,000 Greek families are still waiting. When will you act on your promises?”
Public school teachers also mobilized in central Athens, protesting about the layoffs and suspensions of public sector employees. They chained themselves to the iron railings outside the monument to the Unknown Soldier, holding a banner that read “Hail Caesar Samaras, we who are condemned salute the Prime Minister.”
The teachers said they wanted their acts to show that losing their jobs would lead to their death.
Cleaning ladies, meanwhile, gathered outside the Greek Ministry of Finance to protest against what they called their “unjust” layoffs. Then, holding brooms, mops and buckets, they marched towards the Greek Parliament to support the teachers and join ADEDY’s gathering.
At the moment, ADEDY is conducting a nationwide 24-hour strike against suspensions and layoffs in the public sector, after the government’s discussion of the Administrative Reform bill.
