Poll Shows SYRIZA Ahead of New Democracy

poll2According to a recent survey conducted by the polling company Alco, SYRIZA, Greece’s main opposition party, is ahead of the coalition government of Nea Dimokratia and PASOK. The survey included the newly formed party of Greek journalist Stavros Theodorakis, called “To Potami” (the river).
Main opposition SYRIZA leads the polls with 20.9% while the ruling Nea Dimokratia comes second with 20%. The neo nazi Golden Dawn remains in the third place with 6.9%, while Theodorakis’ party comes fourth with 5.7%. The Communist party (KKE) stands at 5.2% followed by Independent Greeks (ANEL) (4%), PASOK (3.8%), Democratic Left (DIMAR) (2.8%), the Ecologist party (1.5%) and ANTARSYA (1.1%).
The poll showed that 13.6% of the respondents were undecided while 7.2% stated that they will abstain from voting in the Euro elections.
According to Stavros Theodorakis, leader of the “River”, the party represents “ideas from parties on the left, as well as liberal political powers.” During a press conference on Tuesday the journalist stated that the party’s main goal is to create a new national strategic plan to bring an end to the economic and social crisis and to leave the past behind. It appears that the River has attracted traditional PASOK and DIMAR voters, establishing itself as a center-left party.
