Greek Foreign Minister Calls for Compromise in Ukranian Crisis

Ukraine riotsGreece’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Evangelos Venizelos on Wednesday, called those involved in the current crisis in Ukraine to return to dialogue. Tension and violence escalated on Tuesday evening in the Ukraine’s capital as protesters clashed with police authorities. The number of deaths have reached 25 and the number of injured people to 241.

“The international community is shocked at the uncontrolled escalation of violence in the center of Kiev in recent hours. We express our strong concern and state in the most categorical manner that violence is not a solution, but merely perpetuates the impasse,” stated the Greek Foreign Minister.

He called both Ukrainian riots and government to refrain from violence and to  find a democratic solution to the political crisis. “In these critical hours, the Ukrainian people need to bear in mind that the achievement of a compromise solution is the only way ahead, and that what unites them is much greater than what divides them,” he added.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, has accused the opposition saying that ” they have crossed the limits by calling for people to take up arms.” At the same time, protesters prepared for a new round of confrontation with the Ukrainian police forces.

The clashes started last November when hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets as the Ukrainian government rejected a planned trade deal with the European Union and turned towards Russia.
