Kalafatis Cold Stores, located in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, is the largest pear production and supply company in the Australian market. The pears of the Greek-Australian family company are featured on the shelves of Woolworths’ supermarket chain while they are also sold to central markets in many Australian cities.
Over half a million trees grow in Kalafatis Cold Stores 500 hectare land. Apart from fruit-growing, the family company also has the largest packing station in the area.
Kalafatis Fresh Farm produces thousands of tons of six different varieties of pears every year. Furthermore, despite the fact that March is the month of harvest, Kalafatis’ family manages to produce different varieties of pears throughout the year.
Vangelis Kalafatis, the company’s founder, left Kastoria, Greece in the early 50s at the age of 19. When he set foot in Australia, he decided that farming was something he knew and had done in the past, so he tried to find a way to buy land in Australia. He worked hard to achieve his goal and in the end he was very successful. He also involved his children in the business, who are now carrying on his legacy.
