Australian Prime Minister Attends Greek Festival in Sydney

Greek festival sydneyThe Greek community in Australia is organizing the Greek Festival of Sydney with top cultural events including thematic events on Socrates, El Greco, General Makrygiannis, Cavafy and many more others.

Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott accepted the organizers invitation to officially open this year’s Festival. This will not be the first time that the Australian Prime Minister will attend the Festival’s opening. This year, the festival informally started on February 1 with appearances from Greek singer Kostas Makedonas. Konstantina is expected to sing at the Darling Harbour’s events.

This year’s program justifies the title given to the Festival as the top cultural institution of the Diaspora in New South Wales.

“Many consider the Greek Festival in Sydney to be the biggest event in New South Wales organized by an ethnic group,” stated the President of the festival’s organizing committee and Vice President of Australia’s Greek community, Ourania Karteri.

“I am confident that again this year, the members of our community will respond to the call and fill the Darling Harbour during February 16-17,” she added.

The program for the weekend includes several music and dance events, food stands and much more. The festival includes more than 30 events, most of which will be occur during February, March and April.
