Flu Cases on Rise in Greece

Greek hospitalFlu cases have been rising in Greece. Numerous Greeks are displaying suspected flu-like symptoms lately and many patients are in a critical condition in the intensive care units (ICU) of hospitals. Some of them have also passed away because of the virus.
The flu has been spreading rapidly and Greece ranked 1st in flu cases and in pandemic strain H1N1 in a total of 29 countries, according to the European Center Disease Control (ECDC). According to scientists, the low vaccination coverage of the persons prone to the virus and the late administration of antiviral medication are to be blamed for this critical condition in Greece.
According to the latest epidemiological report of the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), from the beginning of the year, 21 patients have already died due to flu-related complications and 105 patients have been hospitalized in the ICU of the hospitals.
KEELPNO specialists estimate that the flu virus is now reaching its highest point. They suggest that all patients with chronic diseases or obesity who display flu-suspected symptoms must be immediately administered with antiviral medication to prevent the development of the virus.
The flu virus remains in low-activity in the rest of Europe. However, according to the ECDC, high-activity flu is expected the coming period in six countries (Bulgaria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Malta and Spain).
