Australian Politicians Welcomed Melbourne’s Greek Festival

abbott- Greek festivalIt is estimated that over 120,000 people attended the two-day outdoor feast of Antipodes festival in the center of Melbourne, in the presence of the Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott and the entire political leadership of Australia and the state of Victoria, who praised Greece and the Greeks of Australia.

It should be noted that the Prime Minister visited Melbourne especially for the Greek Festival and returned in Sydney a few hours later while the opposition leader, Bill Shorten, traveled  for five hours to attend the festival.

Despite the intense heat, the Greeks celebrated and enjoyed the concert of the famous Greek singer Kostas Makedonas.

Tony Abbott praised Greece saying: ” Sometimes I feel sorry that Greece lost you, but I feel blessed that Australia won you.”

The festival displayed many stands from Greek schools and associations as well as stands promoting Greek products.

Tony Abbott first visited the stand of the newly arrived Greeks and discussed their demands with them as well as signing a document expressing his solidarity. The members of HACSA (Hellenic Australian Community Support Association) were very pleased with Abbott’s visit.

At this year’s festival all the members of the Australian leadership welcomed the newly arrived Greeks and expressed their support. The Labor Party of Victoria announced that if elected, they would provide 440,000 dollars for the needs of the repatriated Greeks, Greek students and immigrants.
