Greek Ski Jumper in Sochi

sochi olympicsNico Polychronidis is the first Greek ski jumper to compete in the Winter Olympics Games of Sochi, Russia.

Polychronidis was born in Bremen, Germany, to a German mother and Greek father. At the age of six he started jumping and was admitted in the renowned ski jumping school at Oberstdorf at the age of 12. He competed in the FIS Continental Cup with Germany until 2011, when he decided to change citizenship and start competing under the Greek flag in order to increase his chances of competing in the Olympics and world championships. He has reported that until all formalities were settled, he had to complete one year without participating in any official competitions, which he declared to be the most boring in his life.

Commenting on his participation in the Winter Olympic Games, he said that currently he is not in his best form and that does not expect a high place. However, he states that the Olympics are a great experience. “I’m happy being here. Every moment at the Games is great fun for me,” he said.
