Car Full of Weapons and Explosives Found in Athens

Car-Armory Filled With Heavy Weapons Found in AthensHellenic police sounded the alarm on Saturday, February 1, around noon when a car filled with weapons was spotted in the streets of Palaio Faliro in Athens, Greece. According to Greek news, the car had been under surveillance by the Greek Special Anti-Terrorist Unit, for days.
Sniffer dogs were used and when police opened the boot they found one RPG, three rockets, three AK-47 Kalashnikov rifles, four hand grenades and a large number of rounds.
Greek police officers had originally spotted the car when patrolling the area surrounding the New Democracy headquarters. It has been reported that the Special Anti-Terrorist Unit intercepted calls suggesting that the headquarters were being targeted. This led them to the car which was parked about 1km away.
The car, an OPEL ASTRA was under surveillance for 10 days, while police officers were waiting for the perpetrators to approach the vehicle so they could be arrested. In the end the car was transferred to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations for a thorough examination.
The investigators are hoping for positive DNA evidence from the examination. Furthermore the RPG was similar to that used in the attack against the American Embassy. Police officials have expressed their fear that the car may be connected to escaped terrorist Christodoulos Xeros.
The Hellenic Police have identified the owner of the car, who reported it stolen in the area of Keratea.
