“Fulham Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Greek international Konstantinos Mitroglou, on a four-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed sum, which will see the player at Craven Cottage until the summer of 2018.” These were the initial words of Fulham’s official announcement regarding Kostas Mitroglou’s transfer, welcoming the player to the Cottagers “family” and to the English Premier League.
This is the most expensive transfer of a Greek player ever in Greek football history. In addition, the 15 million euro transfer fee paid by Fulham for the Greek striker is also the second highest amount in Europe for the winter transfer window, after the 18 million paid by Zenit Football Club for the Brazilian player Rondon. Fulham reached agreement with both Olympiacos and Mitroglou. Greece ‘s Olympiakos will receive 15 million euros and Mitroglou a lucrative contract with a salary of 2.5 million euros per year.
Until the time that the Lilywhites officially announced the deal with Mitroglou, many believed that the transfer was on the verge of collapse as West Ham had shown significant interest in the Greek striker. However, Mitroglou wished to continue his career at the West London club as he had already made a commitment to Fulham and wished to honor this.
The cottagers are hoping for great things from Mitroglou, particularly in their efforts to avoid relegation. The challenges that lie ahead for the Greek striker are great but the potential is there for further transfer deals. Many English cubs were monitoring the player’s progress and his name was on the shortlist of a number of Premier League managers.
Mitroglou said he is delighted to be part of Fulham and stated that he is ready to seize the opportunity and that he looks forward to working with the club’s manager. “I’m very happy to be in the Premier League, and especially with Fulham which is a major club,” Mitroglou said on the official website. “I’m here because I want to fulfill the club’s targets and I want to help them achieve their goals. I was really flattered that they wanted me so badly and I’m really happy to be here.”
“I’m also really happy to be working with René Meulensteen. I know that he has a lot of experience in football. He explained to me how he works and I am really looking forward to working with him.”
“I also spoke to Giorgos [Karagounis] before I came here and he told me only good things about Fulham.”
His former club, Olympiacos, in an official announcement thanked Mitroglou for his services to the club and wished him the best of luck for the next step in his career.
