Predictions for Cephalonia Earthquake

makropoulos-papazachos1While the inhabitants of Cephalonia, Greece are still counting their wounds caused by the earthquake that hit 5.8 on the Richter scale, aftershocks are still ongoing. Scientist said that another more powerful earthquake could be in the islands near future.
Professor Vassilis Papazachos, spoke on Wednesday night at the Annual Lecture of the Greek Geological Society on “Earthquake Prediction” saying that “based on the medium-term earthquake prediction model that we use, we can predict that within the next ten years there will be an earthquake that will mark 7 on the Richter scale, near Cephalonia, in the Ionian Sea.”
President of the Greek Organization for Earthquake Prevention and Forecasting (OASP), Kostas Makropoulos, during the same conference stressed: “we cannot be sure there will not be another larger earthquake in Cephalonia, because in 1953 the first earthquake that occurred was 6.4 and the second 7.2 degrees on the Richter scale.”
Despite the fact that the first 72 critical hours have passed, the 5.8 earthquake that shocked Cephalonia might not be the main one.
In 1953, the first earthquake occurred on Sunday, August 9, with a 6.4 magnitude on the Richter scale with its epicenter in Ithaca. On August 11, an even stronger earthquake shook the island of Cephalonia. It was 6.8 degrees on the Richter scale and was succeeded by ten aftershocks in the same day.
On Wednesday, August 12, 1953, a powerful earthquake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale and the next earthquake occurred on the same day measured 7.2 on the Richter scale. The last earthquake destroyed a large part of the island, killing hundreds of people.
