Funding from Unlawful Activities for Greek Student Housing Needs

foitikes-estiesThe Greek Ministry of Education will receive four million euros of the total amount of 17.6 million euros derived from unlawful activities — money returned to the state from imposed penalties.
Concerning the allocation of these funds, the Minister of Education Konstantinos Arvanitopoulos announced that they will be used for social purposes, such as the funding of 3,000 students who belong to weak social groups and study away from home in order to cover their housing needs. The funds will also supply blind citizens and students with computers.
The fact that the existing student residences cover only the 9% of all students studying away from their family home, proves the importance of the housing allowance. According to officials of the Ministry of Education of Greece, only 14,000 out of the 150,000 studying in universities away from home, can be hosted in the residences. In fact due to the economic crisis, applications for a place in student residences have increased vertically. Indicatively, in 2012-2013, the demand increased by 19.9% for university residences and by 29.01% for residences of the technological institutions of the country.
