Most of Greek High-Schoolers Still Choose Private Tutoring

educationThe Private Tutor Association of Attica (S.E.F.A.) presented a survey on social exclusion during its annual gala. According to the results, 4 out of 5 high-school students (80%) receive extracurricular educational support.
The survey was carried out by “PALMOS ANALYSIS” company concerning social exclusion and the problems in all educational stages that Greek families are facing because of the economic crisis. According to the study, most of the students stemming from low-income backgrounds usually do not participate in Panhellenic National Examinations.
An unexpected finding of the survey was also that 35% of families with extremely low-incomes (500 Euros per month) provide their children with educational support after the school. This rate reaches 94% for families with a monthly income higher than 2,000 Euros.
The survey was conducted by the Private Tutor Association of Attica (S.E.F.A.) from December 11, 2013 to January 19, 2014 in Greece. The sample was 534 men and women, parents and guardians of high-school graduates of the last five years (from 2009 until today).
According to the findings, 84% of students in urban and suburban areas attend tutorial school while the rate is reduced to 70% in rural areas.
The students who excelled in the Panhellenic National Examinations honored among others, the former Vice Minister of Education Theodore Papatheodorou, the MEP and Vice-President of the European Parliament Rodi Kratsa, the MEP Theodoros Skylakakis, the president of the Panhellenic Federation of University Faculty Members and Professor of Medicine Efstathios Efstathopoulos and the MP of the Independent Republican MPs, Mimis Androulakis.
During the event, the Board of private tutors from the Dodecanese prefecture was awarded for its excellent initiative to provide educational material, computers and on-line education to the students of the remote island of Tilos, Greece.
