In the aftermath of the 71st Golden Globe Awards ceremony, GreekReporter came across some findings concerning the awards and their female participants.
Since 1980 the female nominees for Best Director were just six, from a total of 71 awarded Golden Globes! It seems that gender equality is still up for a long run, not only on-screen but also behind the camera.
The new millennium saw only three women nominated for the Best Director award. The directors Martin Scorsese, Alexander Payne and Clint Eastwood on the other hand, have been nominated with four nominations each, more times than all women combined.
Overall, over the last 34 years, six female directors have been nominated. That’s on average one woman every five to six years. Now, in case you are wondering if a woman has ever won this precious award, the answer is yes. But only once! Barbara Streisand won a Golden Globe in 1984 for the movie “Yentl”.
The 2010 nominations were a bit more “fair” concerning women. Two to eight percent were female nominees, a number which is mainly attributed to the success of Kathryn Bigelow in landing two nominations for the movies “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Hurt Locker”.
The female nominees also stood out in 2011 for their roles in the movies “Black Swan” and “The Kids are All Right”. Apart from that, a major change hasn’t taken place over the past decade.
“Dear Hollywood: we know how you can make more money in 2014. Put more women onscreen,” says the website Vocativ.
