21 Greek Public Sector Bodies May Be Abolished

publicIt is rumored that the Greek Ministry of Administrative Reforms is planning on submitting a new legislative bill that will turn Greece’s public sector upside down. The bill includes the abolition of 21 public sector bodies, part of the Ministry’s effort to make the sector more efficient. The rumored closures and mergers will result in about 200 public sector employees facing suspension or dismissal.
As stated by the Ministry, those bodies facing abolition are considered to be no longer necessary. Among these are the Highway Fund (TEO), the National Book Resources (EKEVI), the National Institute of Labor and Human Resources (EIEAD), as well as the Unification of Archaeological Sites in Athens. A Ministry official highlighted that the main reasons for the abolition of these bodies was the unjustified delay and indifference by government officials. These factors had resulted in the continuing waste of public funds and resources by public bodies that are no longer needed.
