Greece: 16.1% Increase in Tourism

The Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE) announced this week that the percentage of international tourists arriving at the main Greek airports increased during 2013. In December there was a rise of 16.1%, while overall during the year there was an increase of 10.8%.
According to SETE the total number of international tourists arriving in Greece during 2013 was estimated at 17.8 million, compared to 16.9 million in 2012. The direct revenue contribution made by tourism is estimated at 12.3 billion euros compared to 10.4 billion in 2012. In 2014 it is expected that the number of tourists will rise to 18-18.5 million and the estimated direct revenue will be around 13 billion euros.
Greek cities with increased numbers of visitors were Kalamata with 61.25% and 57,967 arrivals, compared to 35.948 in 2012. Heraklion on Crete had the highest number of tourist arrivals overall and an increase of 17.15%, equating to 2.475,927 visitors passing through the international airport in 2013, compared to 2.113,501 during 2012.
