The well know Greek violinist Giorgos Koros has died aged 91. He was born on March 19, 1923 at Andronianoi on the island of Evia, Greece. His father was a cantor and Koros grew up listening to Byzantine music.
“I’m self-taught. My father was a cantor and since I was nine we studied Byzantine music at home. It was a very fulfilling activity for me. One day he brought me a violin, without teaching me anything more.” recalled Koros during an interview.
When he was 12, he played for the first time at a paniyiri (Greek traditional festival), and in 1947 first began appearing on stage. He collaborated with many famous Greek folk musicians including Giorgos Papasideris, Roza Eskenazi, Rita Abatzi, Stelios Kazantzidis, Kaiti Grey, Manolis Angelopoulos, Haris Alexiou , Giorgos Dalaras , Glykeria , Eleni Vitali and Makis Christodoulopoulos.
Giorgos Koros composed around 1,200 pieces of music and was awarded many gold and platinum discs for his albums. He was also mentor to a number of famous artists.
He and his wife Asimina had two children, Nichola and Katerina Korou, the famous folk singer and songwriter. The funeral will take place on Friday at 2pm at the Church of Saint Trifon in Kifissia, Athens. The open casket will be present in the Church from 12 noon for those who wish to pay their respects. Instead of wreaths, the family have requested that money be donated to the Ark of the World children’s charity.
