Greek Volunteer Wanted for Halkidiki Goldmine Case

A non-governmental organization based in Belgium is seeking for a Greek volunteer to help in planning the communication strategy, organize demonstrations and coordinate their teams in the case of the Greek gold mines in the northern Halkidiki peninsula, Greece.

The organization CATAPA works with the impacts of large-scale mining on communities, supports local people and organizations in their protests against large-scale mining corporations, such as in various locations in Latin America and more recently in Greece.

There, in the northern part of the country on the peninsula of Halkidiki, a mining company from Canada is looking to construct a large gold mine. However, the local communities who have been informed of the potential ecological and social impact of the gold mine and do not want a gold mine in their area, as it will have vast effects on water, air, farming and tourism.

CATAPA is working closely with the Greek NGO European Village and supports its actions concerning economies of solidarity and sustainable development.

The activities that the volunteer could be involved in include supporting the daily practice of the organizations, getting updates on the outcome of the Greek goldmine case, research, writing and promoting material on gold mining and helping with the coordination of the Greek anti-gold mine campaign.

Volunteers should possess good communication and social skills, relevant experience in similar projects and have a good command of both Greek and English. Volunteer positions are financed by the European Volunteer Service (EVS) Program.
