Dendias and Papoulias Discuss Terrorism

dendias_papouliasDuring their meeting on Tuesday, the Greek President Karolos Papoulias and the Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias, agreed on the need for stricter rules governing prisoner privileges. The two politicians met after convicted terrorist and member of November 17, Christodoulos Xeros, absconded during a licensed visit with family.
Dendias met with the Greek President at the Presidential Mansion in order to inform him of progress in the ongoing investigation into the attack on the residence of the German Ambassador, Wolfgang Dold, on December 30. The police believe that the attack may be linked to Nikos Maziotis, convicted terrorist who escaped custody in the summer of 2012 while on license from prison.
The apparent dissapearance of Xeros and the attack on the German Ambassador’s residence have raised concerns regarding the judicial procedures for allowing convicted terrorist to be released on license. Both Dendias and Papoulias agreed that stricter measures are required in order to fight domestic terrorism.
According to Dendias, “The action of the Greek Police has led to the conviction of dozens of terrorists in the last few years. Unfortunately I must say, a number of them are free right now.”
Christodoulos Xeros has absconded after a 9 day leave of absence from prison to visit with family. The Hellenic Police and Anti-Terrorist Unit raised the alarm when Xeros failed to show up at Kallikrateia police station as scheduled.
