Greek Farmer of the Year

farmer of the yearThe “Farmer of the Year” award was given to Mr. Ioannis Lazaridis, this year during an event held on the morning of December 20, at the Greek Agriculture Organization (ELGO) “Dimitra” in Drama, Greece. The award ceremony took place right before an informative event about zeolite.
The “Farmer of the Year” institution has been established by ELGO-Dimitra in these last three years. The awards are symbolic and aim to honor and promote the work and production of the award-winning farmer. Mr. Ioannis Lazaridis, who was honored for his vertical integration of cereal production, his packaging and promotion and the fact that he sells directly to farmers.
He was handed the award by the Chairman of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece – Annex East Macedonia, Mr. Zafiris Moustakidis, who said that during the Greek economic crisis this offers opportunity to emphasize on essentials like the farmers’ educating process and the passing of knowledge from one farmer to another through informative events. Mr. Moustakidis noted the symbolic nature of the award and added that while in crisis we have to draw attention to all the forces operating either in research or in transferring knowledge and not to let them be pushed aside.
Mr. Moustakidis expressed his opinion that as an agronomist, the Minister of Rural Development Athanasios Tsaftaris could contribute “a little bit more.” He continued  saying he hoped that even in the last moment, the proposals filed by scientific bodies will be heard.
